Getting Started

  • Threaded Comments allows you to create threaded comments in Jira issue comments

  • We’re more than happy to release this new version of Threaded Comments which dramatically improves the power of creating threaded comments in Jira issue comments. Please note this new features :

    • New comment editor

    • Search for comments

    • Various bug fixes

  • Please note that the last comment will appear at the top of the comments list.

Installing Threaded Comments

  • Log into your Jira instance as an admin.

  • Click the admin dropdown menu and choose Add-ons. The Find new apps or Find new add-ons screen loads.

  • Locate Threaded Comments.

  • Click Free trial to download and install your app.

  • You're all set!Click Close in the Installed and ready to go dialog.

Enabling Browser third-party cookies

In order to use Threaded Comments and to be able to see the comment editor, third-party cookies must be enabled. Please check your browser configuration.

For Microsoft Edge

  • Open Microsoft Edge, select Menu (3 dots icon on top right corner of the browser) > Settings > Site permissions > Cookies and site data.

  • Turn off "Block third-party cookies"

For Chrome

  • Open Chrome, select Menu (3 dots icon on top right corner of the browser) > Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data.

  • Turn on “Allow all cookies” OR "Block third-party cookies in Incognito"

For Safari

In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, click Privacy, then do any of the following:

  • Turn off “Prevent cross-site tracking.”

  • Turn off “Block all cookies”

Starting with Threaded Comments

When you have installed threaded comments, a new tab is automatically displayed within the issue screen.

You canaccess it through the activity tab or add the widget manually for a specific issue through the menubar.

Activity Tab Access

Open Threaded Comments by default in the issue view.

Threaded Comments can be be opened by default in the left side of the issue view.
To enable this feature, you just have to create an empty group named threaded_comments_prefs
After creating that group, new created issues will be automatically configured to open Threaded Comments. Please wait 60 seconds after the group creation for the configuration to be completed.

If you want older issues to have the same behavior, they have to be updated. For example, you can add a new dummy label to these old issues. To execute a mass update, you can use the bulk feature of Jira. Adding new comments / using toolbar

Start adding a new master comment in the “Add a comment” field.

When opening this field, find the same toolbar as the standard version to customize your comment .

Then, add your master comment and click “save”.

To add another new master comment, use the “Add a comment” field at the bottom of the tread.

Replying to a comment and adding a sub comment / starting the thread

Inside a comment, use the “Add a comment” field or click “reply” to add a sub-comment.

When you click on the field, you’ll find the same window as before with the same toolbar.

Add your sub-comment, then click “save”.

Editing and Deleting comments

Like the standard version, this plugin allows you to edit or delete your comments.

Displaying Thread

Click on the “Display Thread” button to view all comments for a conversation thread.

Click on “refresh” button to hide this conversation thread.

Click on “refresh” button :

  • to update the thread after using the search bar

  • to hide the “open thread” after clicking on “display thread”

  • to activate the “Show more” button and reduce the number of comments

  • to update the thread after deleting a master comment

  • to update with new comments

Searching comments

Use the search bar to find a comment or a sub-comment in the comments thread.

Add a keyword of at least 3 characters in the “Search for comment” field and click “Search” to see the selection. Please note that you can create a new master comment directly from the search bar result.

In the case that your search doesn´t bring any results, you’ll only find the field “Add a comment”.

After your research, click on “refresh” button to return to your thread comments.
